How long does it take for diabetic retinopathy to cause retinal detachment?
I know an African American male with hypertension, mid 30's, normal body weight, diagnosed with diabetes about 3 years ago. He became blind in one eye, the other eye is bleeding and retina tearing. I understand it varies for everyone but could the severity of this likely be the result of not controlling sugar and blood pressure? Or does it normally move this quickly even if you are taking care of yourself?
Would a doctor only prescribe Metformin if you were definitely diabetic?
Or would it be prescribed to reduce blood sugar level that was a bit high but not necessarily at a diabetic stage

When your diabetic, do you let your kids buy or bring sweet stuff in the house?
I do good with my sugar until the kids buy or bring stuff like chocolate lovers cheese cake into the house. I had a half a piece which is abt 45 carbs. Damn, I wish they wouldn't get that stuff I just don't have the will power to keep my hands off of it. I only take pills, but the doc says my sugar levels are up too high and then down. Glipiside, 5mg, twice a day. I'm female, 52 yrs, at 152 lbs, with a foot that keeps swelling and turning all shades of colors including black.I've been to the foot doctor and had the tests for veins and arteries. They just tell me eventually I may loose it because they can't find the problem other than diabetis. I try very hard to watch my suger. I get to check it once a day because that's all the strips the VA gives me. I keep telling them I itch all over my body and it's Scabies but they don't care and don't believe me. The dermitologists say it's not Scabies. But something is crawling all over my body and it's not my nerve problem from diabetis because that has been ruled out.
Reason to believe i may be diabetic?
I'm not going to lie, I have a really bad eating diet. I eat fatty oily food, and a lot of sugar.Around Monday, I've been experiencing pain in the sides of my stomach when I take a deep breath. I still feel the pain but now only when I sneeze and I have been getting really bad headaches . Also, I noticed that my feet get numb tingly really easily. I can be sitting on it for a minute or too and it will be tingly already. my mom just brought me home a large slurpee my first time having a large and I dont want to waste her money and I'm pretty thirsty , so I started drinkIng it, and now I have pain in the right side of my chest. So I stopped. Looked up some causes and I saw something about a tumor? I'm seriously freaking out. I'm too scared to see a doctor. I'm scared of what I might hear. Do you think it sounds like I have diabetes or any health problems?

My boyfriend is diabetic - what snacks should I keep in my purse for when he goes low?
The diabetes thing is really new to me so I'm learning on the go. I'm personally a needle phobic Hashimoto's Thyroiditis patient so I get having to diet in certain ways. I've been needle phobic all of my life to where I need 30mg of Valium to get my yearly blood drawn for the Hashi's. But he's soo worth it. Anyway, I need snack suggestions for him to keep around besides juice because he's so sick of juice . I'd like it to be so that I don't like it so I won't eat it , that it won't get squished spoil too easily, and that it doesn't need to be refrigerated. Thanks
My friend is diabetic and he never checks his blood sugars! is that dangerous?
i know that it is important to test when diabetic but lately he hasnt beentesting. i know that because i came with him one day, every lunchtime he rings his mum before he checks or used to check . for the past few weeks he said that his machine is broken and that it only works if another person goes first, this confused me but he is my friend and i didnt ask questions. my blood was 5.7, a healthy number. i then stayed with him the whole time, even while he was on the phone and heard him tell his mum that he was 5.7, my number. i stayed with him for the rest of break and he DID NOT test.it has been going on for a while now and i dont know what to do he eats cookies and biscuits all the time, i know that he knows what he is doing but i cant help getting very worried.i dont want to say anything to anyone about it but i need to know what to do PLEASE HELP is it dangerous?

How do I adjust a recipe for a diabetic?
I am making cupcakes for my mom for mothers day and she has an unexpected old friend visiting from out of town. Her friend is also diabetic. I really want to make the cupcakes for my mom but I also dont want to make something every one else enjoying except her friend. It's a homemade recipe not a box. Can I adjust it to make a batch that is ok for her to eat?The icing is also homemade so I need to adjust that as well. She uses Splenda and I know you make adjustments in recipes with artificial sweeteners but is that all I need to do?

Which Option is the Most Diabetic-Friendly (Cake)?
This weekend is my grandfather's birthday, and I volunteered to bring a birthday cake. I've been doing a LOT of research and while I know that no " perfect" cake exists, I'm trying to bring something at least somewhat better than a traditional cake.I know that the 1 offender in cakes is flour, not sugar. So, my question is...which of the following would be MOST diabetic friendly A flourless cake yes, they do exist that uses real sugar.A flourless cake that does not use real sugar but rather uses stevia.A sugar free cake made with regular flour I may be able to find one that uses whole wheat flour if that's better .Or should I forego attempting to make something not so unhealthy and instead just make a normal cake?
