Who do i report identity theft to and how do i report it?
im no sure if its id theft yet, but i just got my credit report and some things are not matching up. which law enoforcement agency do i report to? the local police and how do i show proof or do i need any? im gettin scared. i dont even know how anyone can obtain credit in my name my credit was bad.
Would cyber crimes (identity theft, hacking ect. be considered a White collar crime?
And if so, could someone convicted of a computer crime request to go to one of those cushy prisons that white collar criminals get to go to?Edit Sorry, i accidentally put it in the wrong section.No lol i'm not considering breaking the law, i just ran across an article about Bernie Madoff and was just curious about who else would get to go to " Nice" Prison.
Why is the victim of identity theft on the hook for money defrauded by somebody else?
So, somebody applies to a credit card company using my name and personal information.Why do I owe that money? I didn't do anything wrong.

They have been dead for several years. I have recently found out that a family member has several thousands of dollars in credit card debt in their name. The family member even has the credit card statements sent to thier own home. I have contacted the credit card companies that I know of and am waiting on credit reports. Do I also need to contact law enforcement?

so my moms ex boyfriend was arrested for stealing mine and my sisters id he has credit cards etc in both of our names but my question is he opened a t mobile account in my name and i have a phone on this plan but he is the only one with access to it i never knew it was in my name so when i call t mobile to tell them its fradulent will they close the account or what are my options because personally i want the account but i have no access to it and he racked up a 926 dollar bill so i mean if they close it will i be able to open another account with them or can i just keep the account he made some other way and what will they say about the past due balance? and the only reason i found out the account was in my name is because hes in jail and the bill came in with my name on it i called them to try to talk to a rep but it was past hours of operation but its my name my social security number so advice here anyone pleaseok all i can do i guess is give them the police report but i dont even know if thats enough he lived at the same address as me very easy for him to get his hands on my DL as i leave it laying around and he just went went in my moms purse and got my social security card so how do i prove it i mean i have a phone on this account so that looks bad for me but like i said i didnt know the account was in my name and to be honest i would like to keep the account open but i refuse to pay his bill that he racked up but when i call t mobile i know more than likely they will close the account but will i be able to open a new one a just use the phone i already have? or can i explain this fraud to them and they just let me sign a new contract and i start off fresh?

Are you responsible for identity theft?
Thankfully I have never had a run in with this issue before, but I always wondered, if a thief gets hold of your information and say takes out a loan in your name, are you responsible for repaying it? Just wondering because I know lots of companies offer identity theft insurance, but I didn't know if it was really necessary if it is already a crime for someone else to do this in the first place?

Should I be worried about identity theft?
A few years ago, in 2006, my husband filed taxes for the first time and found out someone was using his social security number for work purposes so he owed a ton on taxes when he made very little in the preceding year. We filed bankruptcy and just received our letter of discharge so I go to check credit reports. Mine comes up no problem. I go to check my husband's and with two bureaus it says they cannot identify him and he has to call and mail or fax in documents. With the third it is mailing us a form that has a number so he can check his credit report hopefully I emailed best communication with her our bankruptcy attorney because I had a few questions on the discharge as well but when checking credit reports that came up so it has me concerned. Any advice or ideas while I wait for our attorney to get back to us?Also with the one we are getting the letter for, on the security questions to verify who you are it asked about a mortgage from 2003 he was 15 years old , what bank the mortgage was with, what city he lives in none of which were even California where he has lived his whole life and how old the house was that the mortgage was one. two years ago we got his credit report no problem and there was no mortgage listed on there and were able to access it just fine online.Got a reply from her and she doesn't know what we should do in the identity issues so waiting for the letter to come and then after that I guess contacting the rest of the credit agencies. Any advice in the mean time, or even better anyone who has been through this?
Identity theft, please help?
Hi, I have a little problem right now. Starting last year, my friend asked me to join amway with him because his family is already a successful IBO in amway. But due to the contract fees I didnt want to join because it would be a waste of money, but he insisted and paid for the fee on my behalves and just asked me to sign the contract. I did and this is where the problem started. They would use my account with my information to make purchases online. each purchase is worth thousands of dollars which is unbelievable.... not just one month, EVERY MONTH. Now its time to report tax and all THOSE CHECKS that directly deposited into their bank account is counted as my income. But this person I knew for years, i didnt want to just flip the table like that. I asked them politely to STOP USING my account to make purchase and they said OK. But towards the end of year, the contract expires but THEY RENEWED IT by signing it themselves and continue to make purchases with my NAME. Can i sue this person for identity theft?I think you are mistaking, I am blaming my friend for this because they renewed my account without my permission and they are making purchases with my NAME without my permission. I do not have access to the account AT ALL, I DO NOT KNOW THE IBO number, how the hell am i suppose to cancel this without having them do it?
2012 Identity theft on tax return. When should i recieve my refund?
On february 3 I tried to file my tax return, come to find out someone had used my social and filed under me. I contacted IRS right away and did all the necessary steps in reporting this incident. I know that identity theft is HUGE with 2012 tax return, but with my situation they had told me they didnt send the check out to the other person and they recieved all my information by mail in the begining of march. When i look at the " Wheres my refund" option on the IRS website it says I should receive my refund by april 10. Can that be accurate? should it even take this long considering the fact that they didnt send my check out to anyone.Any help or advice would be appreciated
