Why is the victim of identity theft on the hook for money defrauded by somebody else?
So, somebody applies to a credit card company using my name and personal information. Why do I owe that money? I didn't do anything wrong.
Should I be worried about identity theft?
A few years ago, in 2006, my husband filed taxes for the first time and found out someone was using his social security number for work purposes so he owed a ton on taxes when he made very little in the preceding year. We filed bankruptcy and just received our letter of discharge so I go to check credit reports. Mine comes up no problem. I go to check my husband's and with two bureaus it says they cannot identify him and he has to call and mail or fax in documents. With the third it is mailing us a form that has a number so he can check his credit report hopefully I emailed best communication with her our bankruptcy attorney because I had a few questions on the discharge as well but when checking credit reports that came up so it has me concerned. Any advice or ideas while I wait for our attorney to get back to us?Also with the one we are getting the letter for, on the security questions to verify who you are it asked about a mortgage from 2003 he was 15 years old , what bank the mortgage was with, what city he lives in none of which were even California where he has lived his whole life and how old the house was that the mortgage was one. two years ago we got his credit report no problem and there was no mortgage listed on there and were able to access it just fine online.Got a reply from her and she doesn't know what we should do in the identity issues so waiting for the letter to come and then after that I guess contacting the rest of the credit agencies. Any advice in the mean time, or even better anyone who has been through this?

What's the chance of this identity theft happening regarding apartment app?
I'm in the process of renting an apartment. Because I don't work and neither does my mom, we both had to provide sources of income. For my mom, it was an SSI award letter. For me, it was 4 months worth of bank statements I did white out but if you turn the page around, you can make out the 's from behind. I gave it to the manager, who watches over the apartments. She's a little shady and lives at the apartment complex. She is the on site manager and showed me our unit apartment. The apartment is not exactly listed on the internet nor do I know who the owner is. That makes me a little worried, but I did talk to a friendly neighbor who lives at the complex and he told me the owner actually lives across from the apartment complex. In the event I do get denied, could it be possible to request copy of DL ID and bank statements back? And what are the chances of having identity theft happening?
I have become a victim of identity theft. When will I get my IRS refund, if ever?
Upon filing my taxes on 2 4 2012 I received notice that someone had already filed a 2011 tax return using my SSN. I have filed a police report and followed all necessary steps with the exception of calling the IRS as they are closed on weekends. I will be calling them first thing tomorrow morning. Here is my question...how long does this take to fix? When will I be able to get my refund? I had plans for that money I can find article after article about victims but none really go into details about how long it takes to get it straightened out so I can get my refund.I am not a child. I am a married, 36 year old woman with 3 children. We filed jointly and my SSN was the one used, not his.I am not a child. I am a married, 36 year old woman with 3 children. Miami hotel negligence, identity theft, and theft.. Need legal help! URGENT?
I stayed at a hotel for one night only and 24 hours after that I discovered I was missing my phone and remembered that I left it in my room charging. I called the hotel right away, told them my name and which room I stayed at, the receptionist said " You already called this morning and asked us to give it to a person named " blah blah" and they picked it up NOBODY knew I was staying at that hotel, or my room number, or my name, I'm just a tourist in South Beach, Miami I was SHOCKED Now it's not just my phone, it's identity theft and cell phone stolen Plus, I was wondering how the heck someone got that sort of information, my hotel, my room, my name, AND KNEW I left the phone in the room before I discovered it myself This is why I think it's someone from INSIDE THE HOTEL. When I went back to the receptionist, she was very aggressive and unprofessional. Apparently, they never verified who called, and never confirmed who picked up the phone. The receptionist said she only looked at the ID of the person and gave them the phone. No receipt, no ID photocopied, no other proof at all I called the police, two arrived, went to speak to the receptionist for only a minute, and I mean 1 MINUTE ONLY They came back outside not even looking at my face while speaking and started QUESTIONING ME about why I want the phone so bad, and why I am going through all this trouble for a phone. They also asked me " Would you leave it at this if they compensated you $200 for the phone?" and also tried to make the idea seem nice in my head telling me that $200 is the price of a ticket to New York where I am going back to and " are you considering pursuing legal action against the hotel" . My response was that " it was just a lost phone, but now it seems that there is a case of identity theft by the person who claimed he was me, and there's the negligence part on the hotel, and that I'm sure it's someone from the hotel because NOBODY knows where I'm staying or that I lost a phone" .They also lied to me by telling me that my information at the hotel is NOT PRIVATE, which I knew was ABSURD These cops also said that they WOULD NOT MAKE A POLICE REPORT BECAUSE THERE IS NO CRIME AND THAT IT'S ONLY A CIVIL MATTER, BLAH BLAH. Long story short, I did not like the attitude of the cops, nor them questioning me instead of questioning the hotel receptionist, and I did not appreciate their effort to confuse me by lying to me and try to break my story every time I pointed out something important against the hotel. I went to the police station and spoke with a Sargent who was very polite and professional and explained to him the whole story and pointed out the attitude of the officers who came to the hotel. His response in short was, " of course there is a crime here" , " Yes, you have the right to complain to us and follow up on this case through a case number, etc..." Right now, I am really considering pursuing legal action against the hotel but I don't know where to start and if I even have a case legally at all because I don't understand the laws procedures involved in this case.
Are you responsible for identity theft?
Thankfully I have never had a run in with this issue before, but I always wondered, if a thief gets hold of your information and say takes out a loan in your name, are you responsible for repaying it? Just wondering because I know lots of companies offer identity theft insurance, but I didn't know if it was really necessary if it is already a crime for someone else to do this in the first place?
Is freecreditreport.com a website for identity theft? Yes or No? and please explain how you know?
Please give me a good answerThank you for your time
Help! My mail account was logged into from other countries (identity theft)!?
I read a notification from my yahoo account that stated that my account was logged into yesterday morning from Indonesia, and then again in the evening from Serbia. I looked at my checking account today and $500 was taken from an ATM in New York I'm currently in California , one of the thieves apparently used a magnetic card reader to fool the ATM into thinking there was a physical card in the machine. I called my bank's fraud unit and got the situation cleared up, but now I fear that ALL of the personal information that was present in my yahoo account has been compromised, and the thieves seem to be working very fast. Any suggestions would help

Identity Theft by Now Deceased Father?
My father opened about 4 credit cards in my name, all without substantial, unpaid debt. Before I even found out about them, he passed away this was about 4 years after the first card was opened .I wasn't even 18 by the time the first card was opened up, but regardless, he was able to open them in my name. Once he passed away, we found one of the cards in his bureau and that sparked an investigation on my part.I got my free annual credit report, and became aware of the multiple accounts in my name. At the same time, I was contacted by one company that was trying to collect a debt was under $1000 I believe . Needless to say, these people were extremely insensitive to my situation, but said I needed to file a police report against my deceased father saying that it was identity theft. It took me about 3 months to file the police report, which I finally faxed over to that company. That company said that they believe I received financial advice, and that they can't accept the situation as fraudulent. This obviously hurt me.I asked them to please contact me again, since they had my cell phone number, but they of course never did. I'm going to assume that at that time they realized they were beating a dead horse, they decided to sell it to a second level debt buyer. Now, after the first contact I had back in 2009, I had submitted a dispute when viewing my online credit report. I didn't know what I should do, or how to go about getting this off my credit, since I never even opened a card in the first place I did what the first agency told me to do, which was get the police report and fax it to them. After they never contacted me, I thought it was over.Just recently February I received a phone call from the infamous LHR, Inc., saying that they are collecting a debt of around $600 and blah blah blah...My phone call with the representative in February seemed too good to be true. The gentleman was polite, listened to my situation, and began to verify my information. He read off my social security number to me, and then my date of birth. At that point, I told him that my DOB was incorrect and I was born 1 year later, which would have meant I couldn't have opened a card in my name as a minor. Regardless, he told me to simply scan a copy of my driver's license, and that he would contact me later about what would happen. He basically lead me to believe that all I had to do was send him my license and that would clear everything up.Naive, I know, but just recently I received another call from LHR, Inc. that was exactly the opposite of my first experience. The representative told me they never received any correspondence since my first call with them, and then proceeded to give me amounts that I could settle the debt for. I told them that I thought the matter was over with since I sent in my driver's license. She said they never received such an email and the ridiculousness goes on...The problem I am faced with is here Should I contact the credit bureau's and attempt to remove the accounts as fraudulent, or is there some other process to have them removed? LHR, Inc. is claiming that they have the authority to basically keep that negative account on my report forever, which I found extremely hard to swallow believe. If anyone can steer me in the right direction, you would make my life balanced again. I am 22, a full time student, and a part time employee. Every dollar counts in my life, and I can't afford to settle a debt that wasn't mine in the first place.Again, any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank you for reading this long winded rant
