Are there two type of German Shepherds?
I get the impression there is a show German Shepherd with a sloped back that has constant back problems. And there is a working German Shepherd with a horizontal back with fewer back problems. Is this correct?

Types of German Shepherds? which is best?
I have posted on here that I am getting a pup come the ned of the month and I have been checking out various websites and have noticed that there are alot of different breed of German Shepherds. I just want a proper pure bred,no cross breed but can I tell the difference via the photos that are often put with the advert? I know most sellers will mention the type but just so I know myself. Is there a preference when getting on of these dogs? Also are they a suitable for young children?I apologise, I did mean type and not breed of dog. Sorry. Should also have mentioned that I am in Ireland and therefore under the IKC. Thanks for all the advise so far,really

What type of German Shepherd is this?
I am doing very early research on German Shepherd's and I know there's tons of types of GSD's. The build that I like the most is a very thin, athletic build. The best example I could find which happens to be a very good one is the dog in I Am Legend k9paparazzi.com wp content uploads 2007 12 k9p abbeyiamlegend.jpg I know this dog was taken out of a kennel but I was just wondering if anyone with experience would be able to give me more in sight of the type of GSD that has a similar build to that. I'm trying to locate a particular type of German shepherd for our family. ?
I would like one that is the full coated with a body that is not too lean... I saw a huge beautiful black tan with a full shaggy coat that was absolutely a big baby... that is what we're wanting for our small farm. Does this breed have a particular name? I have seen German Sheperds that are lean and smoother but I want a more full coated kind. Anybody have any suggestions?

What type of German Shepherd Dog is good for a family?
My family wants to get a GSD and I have started researching and visiting breeders. Some breeders breed the European standard and others breed the American standard. I am learning there is a difference. I am not concerned with looks and I know the differences as far as that is concerned. My question is what breed is better for a family pet with small children. I was raised with an American GSD and he was wonderful, smart, gentle and great with kids. He never suffered from hip problems or other medical issues and lived to be 11 years old.I have talked with European breeders that don t like the American lines and say the AKC will certify anything. They have also said that American breeders go for looks and not temperament. Also the American lines tend to have more medical issues like hip problems.I have talked with American GSD breeders that say the European lines have too high of a prey drive and that they need to be worked too much to make good family pets. They have said that lots of the GSD that end up in the pound are the European type because if they are not worked they become destructive and develop behavior issues that families can t deal with.I want to make the right choice for my family and get a good dog. We take family bike rides with our current dog every day, but other than that he would mostly be a family pet and companion. I will do obedience training.I would like answers only from people who are owners of either type or that have had experiences with this.
