Can someone recommend to me the best of the best books on german shepherd training?
I'm looking for a great book on training german shepherds, one that details how to bring out their protective instincts, but at the master's command. I have a german shepherd, and he's great, but I want to train him how to protect certain objects, what territory to be protective about, and more precisely help him understand his job and duties on my property. For instance, I'd like him to tour the property at night a couple rounds, first thing in the morning, etc., and I'd like him to do this by habit every day. Also, I'd like him to be protective, but only attack on my command. I don't want to diminish his powerful instincts at all, I just want him to allow me to command him on when to pull the trigger, like in police training or similar. He needs no training on loyalty, because I think he's the most loyal dog in the world

Where to get a german shepherd trained for protection in NC?
Please? I have a pretty girl growing up and I'd like her to be more confident. I live out in the middle of nowhere and she'd nothing more than to work for me She's amazing. Thank you She would love nothing more than to work for me also, I have a pomeranian. I love to do scrapbooks and collect memories.. if you have any creative ideas pet wise, please share I also have a big blanket with a picture of them both. They are my babies. Have any of you other dog lovers found anything interesting?

German shepherd training...Need help.?
I just adopted a german shepherd puppy about 10 weeks old. Shes the sweetest little girl and very playful, but im having a little trouble training her. She doesnt like to come when called. She will either continue sniffing around or playing or just sit there and look at you. She's quite stubborn. She was not too bad with sitting although it needs some work, but she absolutely does not like a leash. She doesnt pull me, she just wont walk with me. even when I pull her. I hate to jerk her around since she was just spayed Tuesday, but I dont know how to make her walk with me without dragging her. I'm trying to not spank her as much as possible. House breaking as well. I hate to spank her. But she does need to be house broken. I dont know what to do. help please.thank youUm, Yes Kaper. Spanking. Thats usually how you train a dog to not use the bathroom in your house. Weve done it with all our other dogs including our jack russell who is an extremely obiedient dog but loves us to death. you cant just say no, bad dog. They dont understand. Its not like im making my dog bleed. Seriously, I got spanked when I was a kid and turned out fine. I dont like it, but its effective and doesnt emotionally scar you or a dog as long as its not out of hand. There is nothing wrong with a firm pop on the butt.I know its too young for spaying. There was nothing I could do. She came from a shelter and they dont adopt out until they are spayed or neutered. I hated that they had to do that so young.Update I feel that people need to realize that some people on here arent awful human beings because they do things differently. I dont abuse my dog. actually i havent even spanked her at all. I dont like to. So im looking for a different route. But I mentioned that to begin with. That I wanted to spank her as less as possible. My dog is doing just fine. I have a trainer coming this weekend to help with the simple stuff.I talked to them before I even adopted her and they said theyd help if i needed it. She is loving her new home. But im guessing anything is better than a shelter. I probably wont even use yahoo answers anymore because people dont give advice, they tell you youre wrong and awful and tell you what you should be doing. But thanks to all the people who arent mean and know how to handle a mere question.

Hi, my German shepherd will soon be 6 months. He understands basic commands such as heel, sit, down, come, stand.... but he only listens indoors. When we go outside he gets too distracted and he does not obey any command, sometimes he does but rarely. Will this change when he gets older?
Can I have my 4 year old german shepherd trained in personal protection?
I want my German shepherd trained in personal protection for my home we had a drunk walk right in . Is that too old? How long would it take and how much would it cost? Does anyone know where I can have my dog trained in Ohio that is reputable? Also can I train her to be a hunting dog or can I only choose one? Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions

I just bought a German Shepherd pup a few days agoshe is still young for training " only 8 weeks" but i wanted to know at what age should i start training her?right now the only things im teaching her is the regular puppy stuff " potty and crate training" but i want to know what age is best for obeidience training?

My German shepherd is nine months old. I've been training him on the positive way using food as reward. Now he knows all the commands and he is doing them perfectly but he doesn't want to execute commands if I don't have food in my hand. Any suggestions?Thank you all for your time to answer my question. I agree with Nyki these dogs are more then pets. Did you train your dog to protect or she does that by instinct? Also I have problem with keeping my dogs attention when we are outside and he pulls, but I guess he is still young and that will change over time.
1 year old German Shepherd training.?
My GSD just turned a year old dec. 11th. And She is a very smart dog. Learns quickly..But she iis quite stubborn My husband recently got offered a job where he will only be home 1 night a week. I know from exp. that she is protective of me. but wouldnt really know what to do to protect me, if necessary, atleast I dont think, never been put in the situation She also knows most of the tricks commands...like sit stay come..ect...But I was wondering if it would be a good idea to take her to a training class to learn to protect me , on command.I dont wont her to be mean.She hasnt been around a whole lot of people just my family. She doesnt act hateful around strangers...only when they approach her in the wrong way or scare her...even then most the time she will only bark growl..and back up slowly.She is the only GSD I have ever owned.Would it be wise to get her trained to protect me on command?Thanks.walking lady Yes I did get her around a lot of ppl as a puppy...until about 6 months old...then we moved into the country...not many people around now...And of course I have read up on her breed..about a year before I got her.

i am getting a 8 week old black german shepherd today and i want to make sure its well trained when it grows up. im 16 and my parents are getting me it and i have some questions.1. will the dog see my dad as the alpha or his owner? i will be training it if that helps u to answer2. is there any age i should start training at.3. what are some feeding scheduals i should use4. any training techniques that are helpfullthankkk youuui got him alreadyy.. he was great when we took him to pets martt he wanted to greet every one kind of a pain lol we couldnt get out of there and i took him out side when i got home and he didnt go and i let him back in and then he pooped but it was my mistake i only let him out for 5 minutes X any ways he was whining once i put him in the crate to start crate training him and he whined and moaned but got bored eventually and slept.. his name is Eico for those of you wondering EYE CO and im already attached to him and cant wait to spend a actuale day with him in the morninn... please more tips if u have them all of yours are help full
